Lawnswood Crematorium
Lawnswood Cemetery, a poignant historical site, lies just 4 miles northeast of Leeds city
center, nestled along the A660 Otley Road. Referred to by the CWGC as Leeds (Lawns Wood) Cemetery, its origins trace back to 1874 when the Headingley-cum-Burley Burial Board acquired land to meet the burial demands of the burgeoning suburbs of Headingley and Far Headingley. Situated on the Leeds and Otley turnpike, this chosen land was part of an existing woodland known as Lawns Wood, just beyond the municipal boundary.
Inaugurated in 1875, the cemetery's first interment occurred on January 23, 1876. Subsequent expansions in 1908, 1919, and 1965 have ensured its continued service. Leeds City Council has overseen the cemetery since its acquisition from the Burial Board in 1972.
Lawnswood Cemetery offers a glimpse into the past with its remarkable early 20th-century monuments. During both World Wars, it played a vital role, now commemorating 222 First World War and 91 Second World War casualties.
The Leeds (Lawns Wood) Crematorium was designed by WS Braithwaite and opened in 1905 and was Britain's first to use a gas cremator. The crematorium remains active today, accommodating services every 40 minutes in its Grade 2 listed Gothic Revival chapel, with seating for 80 attendees and additional standing room for larger congregations.
Please remember: you need to book an appointment at the Lawnswood Crematorium in order to discuss your plans. We’d be happy to help you do this, so feel free to get in touch with one of our personal advisers.
