Sunderland Crematorium
Sunderland Crematorium, under the ownership and operation of Sunderland City Council, finds its serene location within the tranquil expanse of Bishopwearmouth Cemetery. Originating in 1937, the construction faced interruptions due to World War II, leading to a completion in 1951 after the war's conclusion.
Service times at the crematorium span Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, with services typically scheduled every 30 minutes. Flexibility exists for extended services upon request. The chapel, accommodating 56 seated guests with room for 30 standing, provides a solemn space for farewells. A waiting area offers broadcasted services on demand, complemented by public toilets and reception facilities.
Within the grounds, visitors find amenities for comfort, including car parking with additional disabled parking bays, public toilets in the waiting room, and dedicated spaces like the Hall of Remembrance, Book of Remembrance, and the Garden of Remembrance.
Floral tributes are graciously accepted, with a single tribute allowed on the anniversary of a loved one's passing. These tributes, limited to cut flowers, contribute to the serene atmosphere, though items like plants, balloons, and pictures are excluded.
For those seeking enduring memorials, Sunderland Crematorium offers a range of options that can be installed on-site, in designated cemeteries, or in selected parks and open spaces. These memorials serve as lasting symbols of remembrance and reflection for families and friends honouring their loved ones.
Please remember: you need to book an appointment at the Sunderland Crematorium in order to discuss your plans. We’d be happy to help you do this, so feel free to get in touch with one of our personal advisers.
