Durham Crematorium
Durham Crematorium features a distinctive hexagonal-shaped Chapel designed by J. P. Chaplin, A.R.I.B.A. The Chapel provides a serene setting with expansive windows offering panoramic views of the meadowland and distant woodland surrounding the site. Designed with accessibility in mind, the Chapel is wheelchair-friendly, equipped with a disabled toilet, and has a wheelchair available on-site.
Seating within the Chapel accommodates approximately 100 people, with additional standing room for 50. The facility is equipped with modern amenities, including the Wesley music and media system, along with a visual tribute service that allows the display of photographs and/or videos on two 48” screens accompanied by music. Services can be broadcast via webcast or recorded onto a CD or DVD, providing flexibility for families.
The Chapel also houses an organ for a wide range of hymn requests. Additionally, the Life and Soul garden, a permanent feature within the crematorium grounds, was created by tutors and students of Finchale Training College. Awarded a coveted Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Silver Gilt Medal, the garden serves as a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance, open throughout the year at the bottom of the crematorium grounds beside the cemetery.

Directions
From Sunderland, take the A690 and proceed straight across the roundabout at A1M. Follow the signs into Durham City and take the second exit off the roundabout, following signs for A177 Bowburn and Darlington. Exit to the left at the next roundabout, continue straight and bear right to reach the top of the hill. At the traffic lights near the New Inn pub, go straight, passing the Botanical Gardens, Ustinov College, and Park and Ride on the left. Proceed down the incline and make a sharp left into Durham Crematorium, following the signs.
From the north, leave the A1M at Junction 63 and follow signs for Chester-le-Street. Continue down the A167 for 8 miles towards the outskirts of Durham City, pass Nevilles Cross, and go straight over the traffic lights, following signs for Darlington. Exit sharply left at the roundabout and follow signs for Durham Crematorium, which is located ½ mile on the right.
From the south, leave the A1M at Junction 59 and exit left, following signs for Durham and Newton Aycliffe on A167. Stay on the straight road through Newton Aycliffe, Chilton by-pass, and Ferryhill. Go straight over the roundabout at Thinford, following signs for Durham. Continue on A167 through Croxdale, go straight over the roundabout approaching Sunderland Bridge, pass The Honest Lawyer pub on your right, and Durham High School on your right. Durham Crematorium will be ½ mile on the right.
